Most of what comes to mind in this last week is what we've done this weekend, which is what Meredith talked about in her blog- touradas and hortênsias! Seeing the tourada was quite the cultural experience. I hadn't expected to feel so bad for the bull though, seeing as they weren't hurting him or anything. I guess I just don't like the idea of taunting an animal so that it will react for entertainment... but I could appreciate that it is part of the culture here! Running from the bull was pretty exciting, that's for sure. Most of the running from the bull was people getting spooked by the bull just moving though- luckily I was far enough away the couple times he actually charged!
Besides that, we also had the pleasure of traveling around the island today and seeing how absolutely BEAUTIFUL Terceira is! Again, I'm sure Meredith and others have/will also comment on this, but I would like to say myself how breathtaking the beauty of the island is. The views from the top of Serra de Cume were exactly what I had pictured- green checkered landscapes, lined with volcanic stone walls, spotted with cows and hydrangeas (hortênsias!). If I hadn't already appreciated being here, now I definitely do!! I would love to spend another day traveling around the island and seeing the countless sights I have yet to see, so I'm glad I still have a few weekends to do this :)
Besides these two exciting events, my past week was a pleasant combination of teaching, spending afternoons at the beach, lesson planning, drinking galões, and reading! Quite the mix of things, and I'm probably missing some stuff haha I have come to really love the slow pace of Terceira. I have yet to leave the island, but my last two weeks here have been so peaceful and enjoyable. I feel that, unlike when I'm home, here I have the time to actually sit at a cafe and enjoy a cup of coffee. Or lay on the beach and read. I am enjoying every minute I spend teaching and exploring the island with my new friends. Life in Terceira is simply wonderful!
