Today was officially day 1 of the education internship part of the Atlantis Project... and it went pretty well! On Friday we had the enroled students come in and do a diagnostic test which included a few minutes of speaking, some reading comprehension and a writing task. We used the info we got from this to divide our students into 3 ability groups.
So I was a little nervous this morning beforehand as I have never stood in front of a class and taught before - it's pretty different to the very small amount of one-to-one tutoring that I've done before! But after the first 20 mins or so I was feeling a little more comfortable. The students are all great and seem pretty keen to learn which helps matters a lot. I'm taking the intermediate group so it feels like a bit of a balancing act between making things too easy or too difficult, I guess it will become easier as I get to know them all better.
Today we did quite a bit of basic grammar as I saw in their tests that some students were still making mistakes with the present tense etc, so i guess a bit of a recap was necessary. We did some other activities like the name on the head game and describing an object that I gave each of them, but tomorrow I think I'd like to be even more interactive. I got some feedback afterwards from a couple of the students who seemed pretty happy, but who said they thought more active stuff would be a good idea as it makes things a bit more fun. Guess I'll see what I can come up with!
